Understanding Your CSE Rating
After the exam, your results come back as a rating (not just "pass/fail") — a passing rating is 80.00 or higher. That threshold isn't rounded: a rating of 79.99 is a fail, not a near-pass.
How many items are on the exam
The Professional level exam has 170 items; the Subprofessional level has 165 items. Both are split across the same subject areas covered on this site.
How your overall rating is calculated
We want to be upfront here: the CSC does not publicly disclose the exact formula behind your final rating, and sources disagree on how it works. You'll see two different explanations repeated online:
- Some describe it as a straight percentage — the number of items you got right, divided by the total number of items.
- Others describe a statistical or "transmutation-based" conversion, where your raw score is adjusted against how the rest of that exam batch performed — meaning the raw score you actually need to reach 80.00 can shift slightly from one exam date to another.
We're not going to assert either one as fact, because we can't verify which is correct — the CSC hasn't published the formula, and treating one unverified explanation as official would be worse than being upfront about the uncertainty. Treat any specific scoring breakdown you see online (including elsewhere on our own site) as a well-informed estimate, not an official figure.
There's no penalty for wrong answers
An unanswered item scores exactly the same as a wrong one — so there's no downside to answering every single item, even when you're unsure. Leaving something blank never protects your rating; it only guarantees you get nothing for it.
There's no per-subject passing requirement
Only your overall rating matters — there's no separate minimum you have to clear in each subject area. A weak showing in one subject doesn't fail you on its own; it just needs to be offset by stronger performance elsewhere, since everything feeds into the same overall number.
Results are final
There's no rechecking or re-evaluation process for CSE results. Whatever rating comes back is the one that stands.
What this actually means for how you prepare
Because there's no per-subject threshold, don't panic over one weak subject if your overall performance is solid — it isn't a separate pass/fail gate. But don't neglect any subject either: since every item counts toward the same total, a subject you've been avoiding is still pulling your rating down just as much as one you've been actively struggling with. The goal is balance, not a single strong subject carrying the rest.
